I remember telling my graphic designer Niki that when my blog was finished, I wanted to blog all the time. To post my work, to share what I’ve learned, and probably more realistically, to hear the sound of my own voice. Just kidding. Sort of.

Once it was up and running though, I started to realize that blogging was going to be more of a challenge than I’d originally thought. Formatting my images was taking me forever (fortunately BlogStomp came in a saved the day), and then there was the issue of recruiting readers, and then- what on earth do I write about? It’s taken me a while to figure out a system that [mostly] works for me, but I still have times when my blogging prowess falls flat on its face. Like I love that Jasmine Star can blog about something as mundane as a toothbrush and still garner something like 250+ comments. If I blog about my toothbrush? My dad would probably mention it later, like “Yeah, I saw your blog post about the toothbrush… why did you feel the need to share that with everyone?” And my Granny would comment, but that’s because she loves me unconditionally.

Toothbrushes aside, here are some lessons I’ve learned that work for me when it comes to keeping your audience engaged and wanting more:

1) Blog often/at regular intervals. This relates back to my post on consistency. If you leave your blog untouched for 2 months then go on a blogging spree and post 12 entries in two days, a couple of things will happen: a) all of those entries you post won’t receive the proper attention because in your effort to catch up, you’ve created a bunch of white noise for yourself, 2) you’ll overwhelm your audience, and III) you’re not creating any sort of loyalty. Your readers may come back a few times within the next couple of days, but by leaving your blog un-updated again, you’re teaching them that visiting your page is a waste of time, except for when you go on the occasional blogging spree.

2) If you’re going to blog about nothing (like a toothbrush), make it memorable. Instead of blogging “This is a portrait of my toothbrush. It does a really good job of cleaning my gumline and it helps me avoid gingivitis,” you could write about how you’ve been an “Oral-B-or-bust” kind of person since you were 6, and that Oral B Brush-Ups should never have been discontinued (amIright??), and that when you die? You want to be buried with your soft-bristled friend and a tube of Colgate White. Or something. Whatever you do, make it memorable, whether it’s hilarious, serious, or personal.

3) CONNECT. One thing that all of the blogs I stalk have in common is that they’re not afraid to get raw. I feel like if Jasmine Star and I were to sit down for coffee, we’d already be friends because of how great of a job she does at exposing her personality on her blog. It’s what keeps me coming back- her blog posts are like chatting with one of my gal pals. Except, you know, it’s more of a one-sided conversation. I want my readers to feel the same way about my blog- that reading my posts allows them to get to know me better, that my personality shines through.

4) Post early in the day. I usually write my blog posts the night before, so all I have to do is hit “Publish” the next morning. Posting early in the day gives you the broadest window to garner an audience for that day’s material- you can post the link a few times over on Twitter and Facebook throughout the day to make sure you reach people who may be online at lunch but weren’t on at 9 am for your first Tweet/status update.

5) Link out! Post links to anything relevant, whether it’s another photographer’s page, an awesome new product that you love or a post you’ve written in the past. Linking out boosts your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and can help bump you up on the Google ranking.

6) Comment. Comment comment comment. Leaving words on someone else’s page can also help to boost your SEO, especially if the page you’re commenting on is a high-traffic one. If you see a blog post you love, leave them a note saying so. Tell them which photo was your favorite, or offer some words that contribute to their post. I love receiving blog comments- it helps me know which posts are working and which ones aren’t. Plus, they make me feel loved, and that’s always a good thing. I originally set a goal of commenting on 5-7 different blogs per day, but I’ve gotten so used to doing it (because I love encouraging people!) that I’ve left upwards of twenty in one day. Just make it a habit; if you stop by a blog and like what you see, why not tell them what a great job they did?

What are some of your blogging best practices?

Lessons Learned: Blogging

January 25, 2012

  1. LOL about the toothbrush, but I totally understand what you mean 🙂 I used to worry that if I was too raw in a blog post people would use it against me, but I quickly got over that. Being open and up front about who you are will only serve to get you the clients who really connect with you. Plus, it makes for a more interesting read than the usually ‘fluff’. Well said 🙂

  2. The toothbrush thing is hilarious. I am quite attached to mine actually so I know what you mean. I think you do a GREAT job of connecting. I feel like we are best friends and the reality is we only met once for all of 5 minutes. I mean, I could just be a creepy stalker person for all the face-time I have spent with you!

  3. Great advice! It’s difficult to get encouraged at times.. I know I need to be better about blogging. It’s on my mind all the time but it’s hard to get motivated and find something to write about!

  4. Such great advice Abby! Your personality definitely comes through in your blog (and Facebook) posts!

  5. I’m working really hard on being consistent with my posts! I also try to write everything up ahead of time so I can just publish when I’m ready to. How do you come up with ideas for different things to post about?

  6. Hollie says:

Thanks for the tips! I am trying to be a better blogger. I’ve committed to two easy blog posts a week. Now, I need to commit to showing my personality more. Oh, and I <3 your blog! 😀

  7. Sometimes I think blogging and commenting is a full-time job, although the hardest part for me is finding stuff to write about. I mentioned this before on Twitter, but I’d like to find the balance between personal and professional posts.

  8. Janice says:

Hi Abby – just came across your blog and love your pictures. Your blog advice is right on the money, too. We try for consistency and great pictures – now just need to work on getting more people to see our posts.

  9. Rebekah Hoyt says:

This is great motivation, considering that I blogged yesterday about having blogger’s block! Thanks for the tips!

  10. Vanessa says:

Those last two pictures are sooooo cute!! And I love that in your down time from giving us pictures of cute couples your are showing us how you like to do things or giving advice. It’s a great way to get to know you more.

  11. Elizabeth says:

I have a blog that I write on while Andrew is deployed or other military things are happening… but it’s not a REAL blog like yours is 🙂 I love your blog! I love that you post all the time, because it drives me nuts when I find something/someone I like, but then they never put anything new up! I lose interest, totally. Then, you always post about such funs things, like behives and new flip flops! Above all, though, I feel like I am visiting a friend when I read your blog. Oh, yeah, AND you have photos that make my eyes happy. That’s awesome, too.
    Love you.. and your blog!

  12. heather says:

Great post Abby! I can totally relate that as a photographer blogging can take foorrrevvverrr……but it has to be done regularly. Thanks for the good reminders:)

  13. Abby says:

Oh Abby. My mom probably thinks I’m crazy for giggling at my computer. 😉 You’re da bestttt.

  14. Jean Hensley says:

Your Granny does love you unconditionally, but I love reading your blog!

  15. Mary says:

Blogging is how I got into the photography business. So many people were commenting on my images and wanting to know how to buy them. Then a funny thing happened, the more portrait and event work I was doing (therefore editing) the less time I had for blogging! (Oh and the addictive quality of Facebook and Pinterest doesn’t help either!)

  16. Thank you!!! You just saved my blog! I have been looking for something that would make my images crisp online because they always look horrible when I post them and I also wanted something affordable I could easily make collages with. BlogStomp is perfect! Thank you SO much for mentioning it!

  17. This is a wonderful post! Just earlier today I was trying to brainstorm blog post ideas and how to implement them. Thank you for sharing such great insight!

  18. Abbey says:

Awesome post Abby! (Wink-wink). I suffer from writer’s block, but am determined to work through it and blog more often, especially during now during the off-season. I also agree with you about commenting on other blogs. Everybody could use a little love and we all get happy when we see that someone’s commented on a post. I try to do that everyday. Thanks for reminding us!!!

  19. Suzanne says:

I LOVE reading your blog, and it’s really helpful to hear not only the things you have to share but what your readers have to share. I think it’s awesome that you aren’t afraid to share your knowledge with everyone. I’m really looking forward to working with you by the way, with Bree from Capital Romance for the shoot next month. 😉

I’m usually just a creeper and don’t comment, but your #6 makes total sense. I might as well encourage and leave feedback for people if I’m already at the blog!

  20. Tyler Herrinton says:

Great advice! It’s true how people like Jasmine Star can make the most simple things seem super important and interesting! After reading this, it makes me want to go work on my blog for today! haha

  21. Annetta says:

Thanks for this post and your insight. Love your blog and pictures.

  22. Lauren Jolly says:

This is great advice, Abby! I blog at least every wednesday and I occasionally add extra posts when the inspiration strikes! I have people on Facebook telling me they look forward to my weekly posts and even people asking me about it if I write later in the day. It has been so rewarding and a great way to get your name out there! Love your thoughts! (obviously taking your advice about commenting haha)

  23. Jennifer B says:

Hi Abby! Great post about blogging. I’ve been a blog follower of yours for almost a year now after finding you from J*. I’m usually not brave enough to comment but this post inspired me to comment more. I love your work!

  24. Terra Dawn says:

I just bought a toothbrush yesterday!!! (I know that was not totally the point of the blog…but well timed!!)

I seriously love buying toothbrushes!! I wish they would make adult toothbrushes that were glittery like the barbie ones. Because seriously??? Just because I am older DOESN’T mean I don’t want to have fun with hygiene.

  25. Kayla says:

Just stumbled upon your blog from another one I visit regularly. Really enjoyed reading this entry haha it made me smile.

    Also, your nerd entry. Awesome.

  26. Karen Field says:

I love what you wrote. Good advice for bloggers and the readers of those blogs. And I agree, the blogs I like the best put themselves out there letting their personalities come through. I’m proud of you!

  27. Becca says:

I love looking at photography blogs but often times forget to look at them for months at a time. Not with yours! I would say you have done a fabulous job at doing all of the things you listed! I always come back to your blog because I really do feel like you’re an old girl friend! Your personality shines through in each post. Not to mention, I’m always reminded multiple times a day on facebook when a new blog is up, and sometimes when reading other photography blogs I am led to yours because of a comment you posted! These are such great tips, I am proof that they work! 🙂

  28. abotz says:

yay!! I love this!! I soo need to get started on blogging frequently!! and getting creative about how to blog about a freakin tootbrush!! loves to yah! =)

  29. Jo says:

Great post …I’ve noted your tips and look forward to putting it into practice!
