Welp, today my little brother enters his mid-twenties. WEIRD. I don’t remember a time without Seth, since we’re only 15 months apart, but I remember that cherub-like little face without a problem. More often than not, he had a mushroom cut, or “surfer cut,” as my mom referred to it, and he had the CUTEST smile. And the best laugh! Being the youngest, Seth loved making me and Ethan, our older brother, laugh til we were in stitches, so he’d do whatever it took, including saying “no-no words” my parents had forbade us to speak. I remember with striking clarity one particular such event that took place in the back seat of our old white station wagon: Seth was uttering one of the forbidden words over an dover again from his car seat as my dad reached back from the driver’s seat to swat him on the leg, and Ethan and I were ROLLING laughing. And even though Seth was being disciplined by my dad, he was in stitches too, that delight of a child who’s managed to make his older siblings laugh.

We had a lot of fun as kids. Things were often hard with my mom’s medical conditions and various other struggles my family went through, but I’ll always, ALWAYS treasure those times we laughed together. Like the time my parents were quizzing us on our catechisms and my dad asked Seth,”What covenant did God make with Adam?” And just to make us laugh, even though he knew he’d probably get in trouble, Seth answered “DISCO!”

Looking back on the difficulties my family faced growing up, I’m so much MORE proud of Seth and the awesome man of God he’s grown into. He’s a fierce friend and always makes sure to leave video “Happy Birthday” messages for others on their Facebook wall (but since I don’t know how to do that… a blog post will have to do!).

Seth’s in the US Army, serving as a Chaplain’s assistant, and for the past couple years we’ve been lucky enough to have him stationed close to home. He’ll be moving to a different base at some point soon so this is likely to be the last birthday we’ll get to spend with him for a while, and I’m going to miss having this kid nearby. I know he’s going to do amazing things wherever he’s going though, and I’m so excited to watch him grow!

Happy birthday, Sethy!

  5. Karen Field says:

What a wonderful tribute to your brother. I love hearing about the stuff that happened that your Dad and I didn’t know about, as well as being reminded of some of those silly situations. The word he kept repeating in the car was fart, I believe. It was hard to be the adult in that situation. It really was funny.

  6. Dad says:

    Awesome post Abby! DISCO!
