Can we all agree that it’s now officially fall? If September 1st doesn’t mark the beginning of autumn, then surely the day after Labor Day does, right? Yes? Good. So ladies, feel free to start breaking out those boots, scarves and sweaters! Although, I’m not sure how much good it’ll do it- the high today here in Reston is 83. Oh well!

Speaking of autumn trademarks, I have this complex where I can’t enjoy a a product intended for a certain time before that time has arrived. Kind of like Christmas music; it was drilled into my mind that Christmas music was to be enjoyed ONLY beginning the day after Thanksgiving, and doing so any time before Black Friday was akin to sin. So things like Oktoberfest beers, pumpkin-flavored treats, and anything generally intended for enjoyment during fall? I can’t do it before September 1st- it feels wrong. And maybe that’s just because I want the short, limited time of enjoyment to be as sweet at possible, and starting on fall-flavored things in August feels like I’m cheating, but I had a Sam Adams Oktoberfest two weeks again and felt guilty about it. Oy.

As always, lessons learned/things that transpired over the past week:

  • I’m convinced Matt is a wizard. We were in Harris Teet last week, walking past a display of Double Stuf Oreos, when I told him I wish I could buy ONE Oreo with twice the stuffing, so that I could eat it, enjoy it, and then not have an entire package sitting around waiting to fatten me up for winter. And then Matt produced a box of eight lunch-size packages with three Oreos each. See? Wizard.
  • Nothing gets my blood pumping like driving through the parking lot at the Leesburg Outlets on the weekend of a good sale. Labor Day weekend means 50% off at the JCrew Outlet, and woe betide anyone who thinks they can steal a parking spot from me when I’ve been waiting patiently with my blinker on for seven minutes already. WOE BETIDE YOU.
  • Matt and I are getting tired of having to take Lily to PetsMart every time she needs her nails cut so we bought a clipper and did it ourselves this weekend. We learned two things: a) if we’re ever going to attempt that again, Matt needs to be home to pin Lily down, and 2) she’ll need a distraction like peanut butter to keep her from kirking out. Other than that, it went pretty well.
  • Let’s talk about how amazing Chicago is. IT’S INCREDIBLE! I had an engagement session in Chicago yesterday and, for some reason, I’d been expecting a sort of run-down version of DC. Waaay off. It’s SUCH a cool city! Matt & I will definitely be making a return trip together at some point so we can have time to explore, since I was there for less than 24 hours. I still managed to see The Bean as we drove by, though!

This week on the blog is going to be lovely- a Georgetown anniversary shoot and a windy city engagement session!

  1. Katie says:

Haha I’m totally with you on not being able to enjoy things outside of their season. For me, I’m trying to abstain from pumpkin/fall things until the weather cools down…I just can’t drink a PSL when it’s hot out lol

  2. Rebekah Hoyt says:

Ahh all of your sneak peeks are gorgeous! I’ve never been to Chicago but I’ve always wanted to go – seeing your sneak peeks makes it look even more amazing than I also previously imagined (who knows why all of us East Coasters were SO misled about Chi-town?!)

  3. Natalie says:

Chicago is on my list of cities to visit! 🙂 Hope you had fun!!

  4. Hey, Chicago’s my neck of the woods! Looking forward to seeing more! Love that shot over the water… the blue of Lake Michigan is so great!

  5. Karen Field says:

Anticipation. Not, “No, you can’t have that now,” but it will be that much more delightful to you if you also choose to enjoy the build up, the anticipation, of it, and then the pure, unadulterated pleasure of that first Pumpkin Spice Latte! (Is that couple at the beginning of today’s blog from your church? So sweet! Mom
