Well, today I was going to post all these fun little tidbits and quirks from our weekend, but then today turned out to be a bit of a doozy! First, let me set the scene for you: Matt’s not a guy to complain if something isn’t seriously bothering him. I mean, this is the guy that I was married to for almost two years before I saw him actually get angry about something (and that “something” was driving in New York City). He’ll minimize a migraine just to keep me from worrying about him.

Over the weekend I came down with a short bout of the flu, so rather than going to Matt’s flag football game, I stayed home and spent the evening flicking through Hulu Plus (by the way, the complete series The Hills is on there- WHAT?! There goes all of my free time!). Then I received a call from Matt, telling me not to freak out [cue: freak out], but that he “sort of” hurt his Achilles’ tendon and friends of ours were driving him home from the game.

His ankle was still bothering him this morning, so we spent today in and out of the various catacombs of Kaiser Permanente, with no less than three appointments in a span of a few hours. During our visit with the podiatrist, the doctor leaned over Matt’s leg and was checking his muscles, and I mouthed “is it torn?” and he mouthed back “Oh, yeah.” Turns out what Matt was hoping was just a sprain actually turned out to be a ruptured Achilles tendon- you can even feel the gap in the torn tissue. We have surgery scheduled for Thursday. I’m worried about him, and he’s worried about me, and we’re trying to figure out what the next couple of months will look like since Matt works 30-45 minutes from home and can’t drive, due to the fact that the foot he injured is his right one.

SO. What to do? I’m sure the next few weeks will involve a lot of trips to Redbox, visits to the library, and more doctor’s appointments than we’d ever imagined. But you know what? If I have to be thankful for something, I’m thankful that the tables are turned and now it’s my chance to serve him. Matt has the sweetest, most servant-oriented heart of anyone I’ve ever met- if I casually remark that I’ve been craving Sour Patch Kids, his jacket’s already on and he’s out the door on the way to the grocery store. If Lily whines in the middle of the night and needs to go to the bathroom, he’s the one taking her out at 3 am. He’s so humble, so tenderhearted, that I often don’t have the chance to serve him in the same way because he’s so concentrated on blessing me.

Well, now he doesn’t have a choice. And neither do I. This is what marriage is- in the good times and bad, the times of health AND sickness, serving one another in joy and thanksgiving. It’s my turn to find out what that really looks like, after having it modeled so wonderfully for me over the past three+ years of marriage. And I, for one, am looking forward to it.
