Back in January, I blogged about my Kelly Moore B-Hobo. Everything I wrote in that post still holds true, just in a different context. My original intention in buying the B-Hobo was to have it as a “tote around town” bag, so that if we went to a social function or church event and I wanted to bring my camera, I could do so without lugging my entire camera bag. I was still shooting weddings with my ShootSac as my lens changer bag, so my Kelly Moore was just for casual settings. Well, the ShootSac’s pockets are pretty narrow and I was having trouble getting my 50mm 1.2 (a fat lens) out without having to resort to shaking the ShootSac, and after a couple of close calls where I nearly dropped my lens, I started bringing my B-Hobo to weddings instead. Unfortunately though, the B-Hobo has a pretty narrow opening which required fancy finagling to extract and deposit lenses, and I DID end up dropping my 50mm 1.2 as a result of trying to juggle my lenses + camera body during a switch. Fortunately, it landed on the plastic end cap so everything was ok, but I decided that meant it was time to switch things up.

My good friend Rebekah let me borrow her Kelly Moore Classic a couple weekends ago for my double header and it ended up being the exact thing I needed! A couple of days after I returned Rebekah’s bag, I’d ordered one of my own, and now I’m super excited to have it with me on wedding days. The two weddings I shot with Rebekah’s bag resulted in faster lens changes and being ready to go sooner without the fear of a lens slipping out of my grip.

I use these front pockets for business cards, and the side pocket is where I keep my phone throughout the day.

The roomy back pocket is where I keep the wedding day schedule and my information sheet!

The classic can comfortabley hold up to 4 lenses (pictured here with 3, and the extra space devoted to batteries/cards/chapsticks/etc.), and thing I love most about this bag is how wide the opening sits. A wide opening was my biggest concern- the narrow opening of my B-Hobo was what resulted in dropping a lens, so I needed something that would allow me to reach in QUICKLY without having to push my bag’s zipper out of the way, and without getting my hand stuck.

This is what my general set-up looks like- I carry two lenses, have an open slot for whichever lens I’m depositing into it as I switch, and then another slot occupied by the aforementioned accessories.

I always hook my ThinkTank card carrier onto my bag, just in case it manages to fall out somehow!

See? Much wider opening! I’ll still be using the B-Hobo for casual settings, but it’s just not practical for me on weddings day when I need to be able to change lenses quickly. Classic = good lenses changing bag. B-Hobo = good “tote around town” bag.

Don’t judge my outfit. I don’t dress up when I work from home :).

  3. i have this bag in this color! and i LOVE it too 🙂

  4. Rebekah Hoyt says:

Great review! I hope you enjoy it as much as I have loved mine!! 🙂

  5. Jean says:

    Nice bag! Love you!

  6. Annetta says:

I have this bag and I LOVE it. I use it for all my shoots.

  7. I use my Classic and Hobo exactly like yours! Ditched the Shootsac a while ago…it was just too hard getting lenses in and out. Check out the Undfind bag too– I got it for Chris and he loves it!

  8. Annamarie says:

YAY! I’m so glad you love it! This made me consider getting the classic next instead of the Hobo!

  9. Karen Field says:

How nice of Rebekah to loan you her bag for you to try it out to see if it would work for you! I hope your fellow photog friends found this post helpful. The shoulder strap looks comfortable, too. Congrats on your find!

  10. If you think the 50 1.2 is bad, the 85 1.2 is COMICAL watching me try to finagle it out of my shootsac hahaha. I do a little dance, jiggle the bottom, twist and turn the lens, smile awkwardly at my couple… but I only use the 85 for portraits so thankfully I only have to do this battle once during a wedding day, otherwise, I’d have to reconsider the shootsac!

  11. […] guys already know that I use the Kelly Moore Classic as my lens changing/carry-it-with-me-whilst-shooting bag, but […]

  12. Jami Clayman says:

Thanks for the great review. I’ve been on the fence about purchasing the shoot sac. For $170 it isn’t exactly what I want, and I have concerns about the lens slot size.

I’ve seen reviews on other Kelly Moore bags, but the one I looked at didn’t look like an excellent fit either (we’re picky about bags, but we have to be, right?). Thanks for this new Kelly Moore bag to look into. 🙂
