Hey friends! I apologize profusely for the week and a half of nothing over here on my end. I had a pretty crazy week last week-

  • My husband graduated from Mason (so proud of you, darling!)
  • I had a portrait session with my best friend Sarah, Sarah’s horse, gorgeous morning light, and a Canon camera (photos to come soon, and I’m warning you- they’re to die for)
  • I second shot for my good friend Terra of Terra Dawn Photography on Saturday

Many of you know that, until this point, I’ve been a diehard Nikon user. My first DSLR was a Nikon, and I was brand loyal to the core. Canon users were evil. Not really, but you get where I’m going.

This past February, I had the chance to go out with Terra, Mike, and a couple of friends (Megan and Tyler) for a “redemption shoot” (see that entry here). Mike taught me pretty much everything I know about operating a Nikon, so he’s my go-to guy for technical questions. Terra, however, is a Canon user. I’ve always loved her use of color, and was frustrated that I couldn’t achieve similar results without a lot of time spent in PhotoShop(though it definitely had something to do with the fact that I was shooting with a $130 lens).

So I started researching. Canon or Nikon? Someone I know likened the debate to the difference between Mercedes and Lexus. Both cars get the job done, it just depends which one you prefer.

I needed to upgrade my camera body anyways, so the choice was between the Nikon D700 and the Canon 5D mkii. My husband, the ever-wise man that he is, insisted that I rent both cameras to shoot a weekend with so that when we made our choice, it was a fully-informed one. Well, I shot Ashley and Waylon’s wedding a couple of weeks ago with the Nikon D700, and it performed marvelously. The color, white balance and resolution was eons better than my D300s. My editing process took me about half of what it normally does. Three weeks, instead of six (HALLELUJAH!). Here’s a photo from their wedding (post coming soon!):

I had the Canon 5d mkii this past weekend for Sarah’s portrait session and the wedding with Terra, and it blew my mind. Sarah and I met up at 6:15 (yes, that’s 6:15 AM, folks) at the barn where she keeps her horses. I had the 50 mm 1.2 portrait lens, which is my new favorite thing ever. These photos made me swoon, even seeing them unprocessed on the back of the camera. Sarah’s post will be coming soon, too! Here’s my favorite (so far) from her session:

After a weekend love affair with the Canon, I have decided to make the switch. Thank you, Matt, for supporting me in taking the plunge. That’s trust- a husband who says “Sure, honey! Sell all of your thousands of dollars in equipment so that we can afford to switch systems. Hopefully you won’t regret it!” Thanks to his wisdom and insistance that I try both, I know I’m making the best choice for me.

Watch out, world. I’m shooting Canon.

The great debate- Nikon v. Canon

HMMMMMMM. I have been considering switching to NIKON. I guess we all want a different experience too. I like the image quality of thier stuff and their lenses are cheaper. But deep down, i know that canon is my first love.

I want to master both. thank you for this post.

SO Happy to see this!!! I’m doing this – this week, too. I love love your story – gives me hope, girl. Thanks for the link.

Abby, were these files shot as jpegs or RAW and processed later? Like you, I am a Nikon guy, but have been contemplating the switch after shoot a friends 5d w/ jpegs. There is something about skin tones and color in a Canon that I like, but haven’t shot a Canon in RAW yet. I haven’t shot either the D700 or 5d in RAW yet, and might be doing the same thing you did (rent both) to find what I like. Thanks!!!
